Now, I'm all for women on the high court. I just don't like people saying that because last time it was a woman, this time it's "gotta" be a woman.... I've said it before and I'll say it again. I'd hate to think that a female SC justice would ever sit in her office thinking, did I get my job because I'm a woman?
That said, Elisabeth Bumiller covers the gender angle in a (cough) remarkably adequate if cute-sy fashion here.
A brief taste:
"When Laura Bush said in a television interview last week that she hoped her husband would name a woman to succeed Justice Sandra Day O'Connor on the Supreme Court, a lot of people saw it as a top item on the first lady's "honey-do" list. But Republicans close to the White House said that people had it reversed. Mrs. Bush, they said, was not so much nudging her husband as reflecting his thinking."
PS: Why are people so die-hard convinced there must be a puppeteer behind the President? Karl Rove, Mrs. Bush, VP Cheney, Sec. Rumsfeld, Sec. Rice... sigh. It's kind of like what happens to powerful women-- the media look for the powerful people around them, because clearly someone else must be heavily influencing them, as women cannot take decisions on their own.
PPS: Speaking of powerful women, if I had as many frequent flier miles as she does, I think I'd go to Tahiti. Four Times.
Quote of the week:
"Women are sexy! Oh goodness no!"
